Kicking off this year’s Maui Whale Festival, a month long celebration of the marine mammal that inspired the creation of our organization, is our annual Run & Walk for the Whales event February 02, 2019. There are so many reasons to participate this year!
Support a Cause
All proceeds from the event support Pacific Whale Foundation’s humpback whale research in Hawaii and other parts of the Pacific, marine education programs for local school children, as well as conservation programs including efforts to keep marine debris out of our oceans, to prevent vessel-whale collisions and to end whaling worldwide.
Beautiful Scenery
As you run along 1 of 4 coastal courses, you will be immersed in the natural beauty of Maui, enjoying views of the natural wetlands of Kealia Pond, where you can spot endangered Hawaiian birds, the west Maui mountains and Haleakalā, rising over 10,000 feet and the sparkling, turquoise waters of west and south Maui.
Whalewatching
This run takes place during peak humpback whale season on Maui and you can easily spot whales breaching and blowing off the coast as you run.
Weather
The temperate weather experienced during Maui winters is perfect for running! With an average February high of 70°, the only gear you’ll need is your favorite running shoes.
Helpful Volunteers
We have the best volunteers who come from all over the world to help us annually at this event. They are trained on how to properly assist participants for a smooth experience and give encouragement as they cheer you onward.
Free Concert
Hawaii’s reggae ambassador, Marty Dread will perform live in the courtyard for a post Run & Walk celebration. In addition to performing throughout the USA, Marty Dread has also performed in Brazil, Tahiti, Canada, Thailand, Guam, Saipan, and China. What’s more, he is the only Hawaii artist ever to play major festivals in the Caribbean, including Barbados and reggae’s homeland, Jamaica.
T-shirts & Prizes
All participants receive an exclusive Run & Walk for the Whales t-shirt, breakfast and the chance to win great prizes, like PacWhale ecotours and other sponsored prizes.
Good for Runners of All Abilities
With courses safer and more walker friendly than ever, we encourage all ages and abilities to join in this fun and rewarding event. Choose from a 1 mile, 5K, 10K, or 10 mile course.
Post-race Whalewatch
Participants are invited to take part in a post-race whalewatch ecotour departing from Ma’alaea Harbor. Tickets will be 40% off for all registered runners and walkers. Advance reservations are strongly recommended. To reserve your whalewatch, call (808) 249-8811 ext. 1 after you’ve registered for the race online.
