Ashley Hechavarria
Education Specialist
Ashley has always had an affinity for all things ocean-related and is elated to bring that passion to a new generation here in Maui as an education specialist with the Pacific Whale Foundation. Born and raised in the swamps of central Florida, Ashley earned her bachelor’s of science in Environmental Science and Policy at the University of South Florida, where she also participated in marine paleo-biology research. Ashley built her career on informal education with tenure at the Florida Aquarium, Seaworld Orlando, and the Hawaii Nature Center. She was also a naturalist on board eco-tours with Mote Marine Laboratory and PacWhale Eco-Adventures.
Ashley also brings over a decade of experience as a marine mammal biologist: most of her career consisted of the rescue and rehabilitation of the Florida Manatee and coordinating conservation efforts for the endangered monk seal with The Marine Mammal Center here on Maui. She also had the pleasure of acting as conservation coordinator at Pacific Whale Foundation where she got to know our community and its needs here on Maui. Currently, Ashley is pursuing a master’s certificate in marine mammal studies at Oregon State University. She is grateful for the opportunity to continue to support Maui’s conservation education needs and be a part of this wonderful organization.
